There are literally thousands, if not tens of thousands, of different skills a digital marketing can develop. But these three skills are effectively ubiquitous in the world of digital marketing. Develop one or more of these three skills and you’ll have an edge in pretty much every other area of digital marketing.
Graphic Design
Virtually every area of digital marketing involves images in some way shape or form. Consequently, graphic design is a valuable skill in the world of digital marketing. Websites need to be designed. Display ads as well as Facebook Ads often consist entirely or almost entirely of images. Even email messages usually require some degree of design work.
Copywriting
Pretty much no matter what you’re doing in digital marketing, words are going to be involved. The whole point of “digital marketing” is to persuade. And in the online world, we almost always persuade through the written word, i.e. copywriting. Got a product you need to sell? Want people to subscribe to your email list? Whatever action you want users to take, its your copywriting skills that are going to persuade them.
Programming
It’s called “digital marketing” for a reason. By definition, digital marketing leverages the Internet. And that means programming. And I’m not just talking about building websites or apps. For example, every area of digital marketing is going to involve data in some way, shape, or form. And programming skills will help you collect and retrieve that data, transform it, and visualize it so that you and others can gain insight into how your digital marketing efforts are performing.
